Great activities sowi undertakes

Main programs
SOWI mentoring clubs
SOWI focuses on education, counseling and mentoring, using the medium of face-face interaction as well as the media.  Our activities over the years have targeted schools in poor, over populated and rural areas of Ghana. By meeting with the young lady face to face, we give her the opportunity to not only hear from a mentor, but to ask the questions and to have the answers her curious growing mind needs, which is often unavailable in any safe environment and available in unsafe environments.  In many cases where we have chanced upon victims, our activities have stretched to providing them with safe accessible health care and advocating for their rights to education. Enabling the girl to remain sexually healthy and make safe decisions means she stays in school and becomes more productive in her community, more helpful to her family and less dependent on scarce social resources.

SOWI Mentoring Clubs is one of our major ongoing activity set up in schools to serve as a basis for continuous sexual health information dissemination through forums and counseling. This is a proactive step to empower the young lady in school to focus on her education and ensure self worth. SMCs provide an opportunity for educating, mentoring and empowering young ladies.

Our main program supporters have been IPAS, Global Fund For Women, Ghana Aids Commision and Eagle Productions. We have previously collaborated with PPAG and Marie Stopes International in reaching out and helping young women. We continue to focus on this activity in the last quarter of the year and early part of 2013.

You encourage you to invite us to work and partner with you to reach the desperate population that needs our activities.
Media outreach
Media remains one of the most important tools for reaching a mass audience with limited resources and this is one of the strategies of SOWI. We therefore engage in social media outreach, television and radio programs to send information out consistently
Forums
Forums give us the opportunities for face to face engagement in communities

Past activity
SOWI under the auspices of one of its patron Eagle Productions Limited organised a fund raising diner to raise money for HIV/AIDS patients. Charles Aikins who has since died received a return trip ticket donated by KLM, food items and money was received on behalf of the patients by Ghana Aids Commission.

CASE IN GHANA

Even though there are agencies set up to handle these issues such as (PPAG). There is still a big gap in the education process as well as a link between women at risk and the help available to them. There is also an overall public unawareness, failure to tackle and a tendency to sweep under the carpet this social menace. In our research, 7 in every 10 women we spoke to had experienced an unwanted pregnancy and almost all of them had undergone or attempted an unsafe abortion.
